What You Need to Play

  • Two or more players, split into teams or playing individually
  • Paper, a whiteboard, or any drawing surface
  • A pen, pencil, marker, or chalk
  • A list of words, our free word generator works well for this
  • A way to keep score, a notebook or a scoreboard works fine

Setting Up the Game

  1. Split the players into two or more teams.
  2. Decide who draws first on each team.
  3. Pick a category and difficulty level, then generate a word.
  4. Show the word only to the drawer.
  5. Get your paper or board ready.
  6. Agree on a time limit for each round, 60 seconds is standard.
  7. Decide how many points a correct guess is worth.

How a Round Works

One player from the drawing team picks up the pen. Their teammates start the timer as soon as they see the word. The drawer sketches shapes, lines, and symbols to represent the word, without writing letters, numbers, or talking. Teammates call out guesses until someone gets it right or the timer runs out.

If the team guesses correctly in time, they score a point. Then it is the next team’s turn, with a new drawer and a new word. Most games continue for a set number of rounds, or until one team reaches an agreed target score.

The Rules of Pictionary

What the Drawer Can Do

The drawer can use lines, shapes, arrows, and symbols. They can erase and redraw parts of the picture as many times as needed.

What the Drawer Cannot Do

The drawer cannot speak, make sounds, spell out the word, write letters or numbers, or use hand gestures to act out the word. Everything must come from the drawing alone.

No Talking or Sound Effects

Guessers can call out as many guesses as they want, but the drawer must stay completely silent while drawing.

Time Limits

Most Pictionary rounds run for about 60 seconds. Some groups prefer a shorter 30 second round for easy words, or a longer 90 second round for harder ones.

Scoring

A correct guess before time runs out earns the drawing team one point. Some house rules give bonus points for very fast guesses, but the standard rule is simply one point per correct word.

Pictionary vs Charades, What Is the Difference?

PictionaryCharades
Player draws the wordPlayer acts out the word
Clues come from drawingClues come from movement and gestures
Needs paper or a boardNeeds no equipment at all
Guessers watch a pictureGuessers watch actions

Pick Pictionary if your group enjoys drawing. Pick Charades if your group prefers acting things out.

How Many People Can Play?

Pictionary works with almost any group size. Two people can play head to head, while larger groups usually split into teams of three or four. Bigger teams make scoring easier to manage, since fewer people are drawing at once.

Tips for a Better Game

  • Match word difficulty to your group. Beginners and kids do better with easy words, while experienced players enjoy a challenge from our hard word list.
  • Rotate the drawer every round so everyone gets a turn.
  • Keep the secret word hidden from the guessing team at all times.
  • Give new players a little extra time before you start timing strictly.
  • Try a themed round using just one category, like Animals or Food, for variety.

Can You Play Without the Official Board Game?

Yes. You do not need the original Pictionary box or cards. All you need is something to draw on, something to draw with, a timer, and a source of words. Our free Pictionary Word Generator replaces the paper cards completely, and works just as well for a video call game with remote friends and family.
